Landscape and Wildlife Photography in the Cairngorms

We travel to the Cairngorms in Scotland for an adventure in some stunning wintery snow conditions to capture some wildlife and landscape photography.

Last week I missed uploading a video for the first time in two and half years and it’s good to be back. I head up to Scotland to visit the Cairngorms with my very good friend Lyle McCalmont, to shoot some landscape photography and wildlife photography. Lyle is an expert wildlife photographer and is my sole inspiration to go out and capture our animal friends. In this video he takes me deep into the Cairngorm woods to shoot the Crested Tit, known locally as the ‘Crestie’. A small and interesting bird that moves incredibly quickly and is pretty shy compared to the other locals.

Best laid plans

The day did not go exactly according to plan. Every time I travel to Scotland I am overwhelmed by the scale of the place. I am often associated with the Lake District, it is truly an incredible place and dear to my heart but Scotland takes things to a whole other level. The mountains are taller and the lochs are bigger than the lakes, but the highlands are so very huge and isolated in a way that will humble any person. The scale of the place is so very impressive but it makes it difficult to capture your best landscape photography. When you do not know a place, photographing it is a real challenge. Travelling to a new location and trying to find a good composition can be frustrating when you know something amazing could be round the next corner but you just can’t see it. I did my best to overcome this and find some nice shots. I succeeded in one sense but failed in another when I could not make a picture out of the incredible trees that were on offer. It was very good fun capturing some wildlife photography though. I am not always a big fan but I do enjoy the challenge of a bit of bird capture. The crested tit turned out to be very shy but I still managed to grab a couple of decent snaps of the bird that only shows itself in the Cairngorms.

Winter Landscapes

The snowy and wintery landscape provided some superb opportunities for some top draw drone footage that was immensely enjoyable. The frozen water of Loch Morlich was also an incredible sight to witness. I feel incredibly privileged to have seen it and it will be something I never forget.

Cityscape Photography in London with a Tilt-Shift Lens

I am in London shooting some cityscape photography and use the very special Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II tilt shift lens to capture some images with nice straight lines.

It has been a been a while since I have a had a decent opportunity to shoot in London. This week I carved out some time so decided to hire the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II tilt shift lens for the occasion. Tilt shift lenses are perfect for using with landscape photography, especially cityscapes where the shift function corrects the perspective distortion normally suffered by wide angle lenses. This distortion causes buildings, particularly those at the edge of the frame, to angle in towards the centre of the frame.

The Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II tilt shift can also be used to capture some excellent panoramas but that is the theme of next weeks video.

London Baby!!

I truly believe that London is one of the greatest cities in the world and provides some great opportunities for landscape photography. The cityscape of London is steeped in history and impressive buildings and skylines exist in every direction, especially down by the river Thames.

The Plan

I started the day with a very clear vision of the images I wanted to achieve. I aimed to shoot North to South across the river making several iconic structures my subject, including the Shard and Tower Bridge. These have been photographed many times so I was aiming to elevate my images. Firstly by ensuring nice straight lines with the tilt shift lens and second by creating and interesting and ethereal feel using long exposure photography. I purchased a 16 stop ND filter for the occasion to achieve exposure times of around 6 minutes.

An Emotional Day

I ended the day on the Greenwich peninsula to shoot across the river towards the bank buildings of Canary Wharf. Overall it was a superb day where I got back in touch with London, a city where I lived for ten years and know very well. The day was actually quite emotional for me as I walked around and remembered all the history I have tied up in the place. I was also very happy with the images I captured using the Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II tilt shift and was a nice break from my usually landscape photography shoots in the mountains.

Landscape Photography - Early starts and stunning sunrises

A Stunning Birthday Sunrise

An insanely early start on my birthday pays off with some amazing light and a stunning sunrise in this landscape photography vlog.

Getting up early to shoot landscape photography is never easy. Some days though, when you are rewarded with an incredible sunrise, it all becomes worth it. Then comes the hard work of making the the most of the available light.

Sunrise photography can often be harder than capturing a sunset. Shooting sunsets affords the luxury of watching the light develop, providing time to get into the right location and compose a shot. Sunrises on the other hand often develop quickly as the sun comes up. Composing the shot in relative darkness provides it’s own challenges as you have to predict how things will look once they are bathed in sunlight.

Filey, North Yorkshire

In this vlog I get up very early and travel to Filey on the East coast of England. My aim is to capture some beautiful seascape photography that makes the most of the stunning sunrise. Coastal images lend themselves perfectly to sunrise and sunset shots as the sea and water reflect all the colour and increase the impact of your image. I find a nice composition at Filey Brigg. To learn more about composition you can check out some of my best landscape photography tutorials on the channel.

Now that Spring has hit I also wanted to tell that story, using one of the classic signs of Spring, the daffodil. Happily there was a good number of daffodills growing on Filey Brigg so I composed a couple of images to try and make the best of these beautiful flowers.

360 Degree Views

Of course, there are also some 360 degree views, all the way around!

Landscape Photography Vlog - The wind tried to blow me off the mountain

A landscape photography vlog in the Lake District

In this landscape photography video blog I face some brutal weather conditions where the wind literally tried to blow me off the mountain.

Landscape Photography requires dedication and often a little bit of resilience in the face of bad weather. Often, following a bout with the elements, the conditions will open up and reveal an amazing photo opportunity at the end of the day. Pushing through the bad conditions would put most people off but for those willing to persevere, the rewards can be great. They can also result in a wasted, or less than successful day.

Safety

Clearly capturing landscape photography like this must be done carefully, bearing in mind the dangers presented by mountainous regions. Having the right gear like walking boots, waterproof clothing and a first aid kit is a must. It is also best to hike with a friend to back each other up.

If you take care though you will find yourself in locations offering amazing opportunities for capturing landscape photographs.

Haweswater Reservoir

In this video I travel to the Lake District and visit Haweswater Reservoir. This amazing man made reservoir is set amongst the mountains and provides drinking water to the city of Manchester. My photography trip today saw me climb the mountain of High Street, a long path across the top of the peaks near Keswick. Although the day started with fine weather, in typical fashion, this worsened as soon as I got to the top.

Photo opportunities were very limited at the top due to the very high wind, rain, cloud and sheer unpleasantness. It can feel pretty lonely when you are up there alone in those conditions.

The day ended well though where I captured a moody long exposure landscape photograph. Challenging conditions but a great day of shooting landscape photos.

Close Encounters of the Animal Kind - Vlog No.3

The third episode of the First Man Vlog.

In this video I pursue a personal photography project that I have been intending to chase down for a significant time.

Personal projects are in important part of photography. You can grind out a living shooting jobs and easily forget why you loved photography in the first place. Indulging in a personal project will remind you why you loved photography in the first place.

In the video I head to my home town in North Yorkshire to take a panoramic view of the town from a cliff overlooking it all. It is a spot that holds a dear place in my heart. It is the perfect place to sit, to ponder and reflect on your life.

It also proved to be a good opportunity to film a tutorial on how to of panoramic photography - https://www.firstmanphotography.com/tutorials/panorama-photography

Sadly I had very little time for this today due to my ridiculous schedule thanks to a roundabout journey that ended today in the beautiful city of Durham.

Don't Rely on the Great British Weather - Vlog No.1

Welcome to Episode 1 of the First Man Vlog.

Photography has been my passion for a very long time and it has always been an extremely satisfying pursuit. I have also dabbled here and there with creating videos and, since starting First Man Photography, I have remembered how much I love creating videos. It is a very different challenge though and has not always come easy to me.

However, I always intended First Man Photography to be more than just a place to find Photography tutorials. I also hoped it could become a community where anyone who loves photography could essentially come and ‘hang out’. That community is building slowly, but very surely, so I felt it was time to start producing content that is not only informative but also entertaining. This is the motivation behind this vlog and also the upcoming weekly show.

This photography Vlog will not be perfect but I hope you enjoy it and see me improve as I produce more and more episodes. I intend to stray away from photography on some occasions into other subject matters that interest me, as we are so often intelligent people with lots of varied interests.

Currently there is no frequency set for the vlog’s. I intend to do as many as possible but i will have to discover what time allows in the next few weeks.

If you enjoy the vlog please subscribe to the YouTube channel where I am already committed to putting up videos every Wednesday and Sunday.

Out!!!!
